Commercialization Planning for Service Providers: NSF and DOE
This one-day workshop is designed for service providers who assist clients with the preparation of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR), Phase I and Phase II applications. The workshop focuses uniquely on commercialization in applications submitted to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy (DOE). Often Phase I awardees fail to win a Phase II award because of short comings in their commercialization plans. Addressing both agency program together makes sense as both NSF and DOE have similar requirements with respect to commercialization and a genuine interest in Phase III success. The workshop will trace the attention to commercialization that needs to be evidenced in the proposal pitch (new requirement) in the case of NSF, as well as the Commercial Opportunity discussion in Phase I applications and the 15-page Commercialization Plan included within Phase II proposals. The Department of Energy requires a Letter of Intent (LOI) before one may submit a Phase I application and also requires a brief commercialization plan in the Phase I application and a 15-page commercialization plan in Phase II. Participants will gain insight into reviewers evaluation criteria and how this helps shape the expectations that must be met when working with a client on developing their commercialization plans. A key focus will be the suggested schedule for working with a client to develop a responsive commercialization plan for Phase II applications for either NSF or DOE. Methods of providing feedback to shape the commercialization plan will also be highlighted.
